Eating potato skins can be so much more exciting when you realize just how starchy carbs can benefit your body.
- Keep those greens going. Eating a lot of fruit and veggies is good for everyone and you should be putting together at least five portions every day. You can have them in smoothies or soups, at the side of your main meal and even as the main meal if you love stews! You can chop apples and bananas into cereals or yogurt and you can add salads to the side of any lunch time bagel. Keeping up with your greens means that you are going to get in much more of your vitamin intake than you think.
- Don’t forget the fish. When it comes to protein, you might consider meat being the most important thing to eat. Fish is also up there – not just slabs of steak or chicken breast! Fish is packed with minerals and vitamins your body will benefit from and you should aim to eat two portions a week. We’re not talking deep fried fish – which is nice, but not going to push you into the healthiest you that you can be. You want oily fish that contains omega-3 fats. These work to prevent issues with your heart and these come in the form of salmon, mackerel and sardines. You can even add non-oily fish options like plaice and haddock.
- Reduce your saturated fats. You want to keep your liver and gallbladder healthy and for that to happen, you have to minimize the saturated fats in your diet. Fats are important, but saturated fats aren’t the healthy fats like those you find in avocados. Too much saturated fat and you can increase your cholesterol in your blood and this can lead to an increased risk of conditions such as heart disease. All of those deliciously processed foods designed to taste good? Those are packed with saturated fats – and while you can have these in moderation, it’s important to keep a good balance.
- Check your salt intake. Are you adding salt into everything? Are you cooking with salt and then adding a ton more when you’ve served yourself your meal? You won’t be alone in it but you should look to reduce your overall daily salt intake. If you cook with it, try not to add even more afterwards. Even if you don’t add salt to your food, you could still eat too much. Keeping an eye on the salt in your food that you buy from the supermarket is important to ensure that you don’t eat too much of it.
