Julie Neville talks about her new book Superfoods: How to Make Them Work for You.
Putting passion onto paper
I have never really had any aspirations to be an author, so this book came as quite a surprise. I was actually approached by the publishers Pen and Sword Books to write another title, but I wasn´t keen on the idea, so said no. During our discussions, I obviously must have rambled on about superfoods as, a few days later, they came back to me and asked if I would be interested in writing a book based on this subject. Because this is an area in which I have a lot of experience and I am truly passionate about it, I didn’t hesitate to accept and so the process began.
Something different for readers
Very quickly I had the layout of the book in my mind and I put fingers to keys and began to write. The hardest part was probably narrowing down the number of foods I could include, as there are so many natural foods and products with amazing health benefits. I also wanted to ensure that this book was different to all the other similar books on the market, so I have not only detailed the health benefits of the foods and why they are so ‘super’ but added interesting facts and also a recipe for each and every one to illustrate just how easy it is to incorporate these foods into your daily diet.
Superfoods as medicine
I wanted to get across just how powerful the foods that Mother Nature has provided can be at not only treating a wide range of health conditions but in preventing them also. Superfoods can actually be our best form of medicine and I am proof that they really do work (as are all of my family and many of my friends). Whether it be stress, insomnia, constipation, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression, PMT, menopause symptoms, poor immune function, migraines, asthma, arthritis, infections or any other ailment or illness you may be suffering from, without doubt there is a whole range of delicious and nutritious foods that can be extremely effective. Maybe your kitchen cupboard or local supermarket could be your first stop instead of the pharmacy at the first signs of symptoms.
I am thrilled with the end result. The book is most visual and vibrant and is an easy read. The whole process has been a real learning curve for me and one which I have thoroughly enjoyed. The feedback has been amazing. It is also really personal and details how such foods have helped me and my family over the years and how we use them. I feel really honoured to have had this opportunity and to work with such an amazing publisher to produce this book.
