What are cataracts?
Cataracts are a common condition that typically affect people as they age. A cataract causes the normally clear lens of your eye to become clouded over time, a bit like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window, and will eventually interfere with your vision.
What are the symptoms of cataracts?
Symptoms to be aware of include: clouded or blurred vision, difficulty seeing in low light conditions, increasing sensitivity to light, seeing halos around lights at night or double vision in a single eye.
How are cataracts treated?
Cataracts can only be removed with surgery. If your symptoms aren’t severe, or disrupting your everyday life, you don’t have to remove them straight away. A new prescription for your glasses may help you see better. If your cataracts are more advanced, you may choose to have surgery. Surgery involves the removal of your eye’s natural, cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (or IOL). Your surgeon will discuss the procedure in detail, discuss IOL options to optimise your vision and answer any questions you may have.
If you are experiencing any difference in your vision, it’s important to make an appointment for an eye exam.
