Congratulations to Year 12 pupil Will on being appointed School Captain at The Manchester Grammar School for the 2026–27 academic year.

Reflecting on his journey at MGS, Will said: “Since joining The Manchester Grammar School, I have enjoyed every moment. Although my time at MGS began during the unusual circumstances of Covid-19, I was immediately inspired by the school’s scale, ambition and history. What stood out even more was the shared sense of purpose across the community. MGS encourages curiosity, celebrates individuality and challenges us to discover what we are capable of. From the beginning, it has been a place where I have felt both challenged and supported.

I have always tried to embrace the full breadth of opportunities MGS offers. Whether in the classroom, on the sports field, on Trek or in music rehearsals, these experiences have helped me grow in ways I never expected. Academically, I have learned the value of discipline and ambition, while my love of languages has been nurtured through inspiring teaching, debating competitions, overseas trips and societies such as SlangSoc.

One of the defining parts of my time at MGS has been Trek. From the Llyn Peninsula and Ayrshire to Tenerife, Norway and Sweden, these experiences have shaped me enormously. I often think back to the drenched 12-year-old walking through Wales and wonder what he would make of the young man preparing for Iceland this summer, ready to take on navigation and group leadership. I think he would be astonished by the confidence, resilience and responsibility developed along the way.

What ties these experiences together is the ethos of MGS – the belief that education extends beyond the classroom and that character is built through challenge, service and participation. If I could offer one piece of advice to any current or future MGS boy, it would be to embrace every opportunity.

Throughout my time here, I have enjoyed acting as an ambassador for the school and I understand the importance of embodying its values and fostering the unity that makes MGS so special.

I am incredibly proud to have been chosen as School Captain going into my final year. It represents the trust of a community that has shaped and inspired me. My aim is to serve the school with integrity, enthusiasm and humility, while being a visible and approachable figure for pupils across all year groups. Above all, I want to give back to the school that has given me so much. To conclude my time at MGS by serving as School Captain will be the greatest privilege.”
