Dr Jonny Rajan and the team at The Manchester Pain Clinic offer bespoke, holistic and technologically advanced solutions for both short-term and long-term (chronic) pain.  With the burden of long-term pain in the population being higher than ever, The Manchester Pain Clinic seek to both manage and offer solutions for a plethora of long-term pain conditions.

Following training in London, Edinburgh and the North-West as well as in Europe, Jonny is an established Consultant at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and also practices at Barts Health NHS Trust in London.

He has an interest in delivering pain-relieving therapies for musculoskeletal and nerve-type pains including knee, and back pain, sciatica and a range of other pains.  Dr Rajan believes that a lack of awareness of non-surgical treatment for chronic knee pain is limiting the choice patients have in managing their pain and prolonging their suffering.

Knee pain can affect quality of life in so many ways, even in the fit and active.  This might be something as simple as going for short walks, mowing the lawn, playing golf or tennis. Knee osteoarthritis is a common culprit.

Many patients suffer from the consequences of severe arthritis.  At the Manchester Pain Clinic, Dr Rajan and his team, use cutting-edge treatments to combat knee and hip pain that might not be suitable for knee or hip replacement surgery, or those patients who have pain despite knee replacement surgery.

Dr Rajan uses techniques such as regenerative medicine, stem cell and nerve ablation procedures for knee pain. These techniques help patients substantially who might not be suitable for a knee replacement, or have pain after a knee replacement.  Severe osteoarthritis and other chronic knee pain conditions can be significantly debilitating but there are non-surgical alternatives. Hip pain can also be treated similarly.

“ 1/3 of patients may have chronic pain after a knee Replacement. Furthermore, 1/3 of patients are not suitable for knee replacement surgery. Technologically advanced solutions to help with pain are available for this cohort of patients.”

Dr Rajan works closely with knee surgeons to deliver day-case procedures and optimise medicines, for patients with chronic knee pain.

So, what is a denervation or ablation procedure?  Essentially it involves applying heat to small nerves that supply sensory information from the knees, such that a small break in the nerve is created. This means that pain from the joint itself is substantially reduced. This can also lead to other positive consequences like a reduction in medication, improved walking and sporting ability and better sleep.

The procedures can be done using local anaesthetic as a day case, with x-ray and ultrasound guidance and with short recovery times.  Even patients with severe medical problems or patients who have had several previous surgeries can be helped by such techniques. Indeed, they are some of the most suitable candidates. The Manchester Pain Clinic has access to some of the most advanced ablative tools to help maximise the impact of any ablation, including in the state-of-the-art facilities at the Orth Team Centre.
