Follow These 5 Golden Rules For A Successful Career In Sales

What can you do to achieve a successful career in sales? You’re entering a highly competitive sector, but if you follow these golden rules, then you’ll be on the right path to success:

1. Never stop developing your skills

You might enter a career in sales with no formal training – or you may have had a couple of training sessions before starting the job. Either way, you need to be in a state of constant development to succeed in this niche. Never stop training or developing new skills. Go on a sales training programme for UK businesses, take additional courses in your spare time, watch videos on YouTube and so on. Do whatever you can to learn new techniques and become a better salesperson.

2. Focus on building a relationship with prospects

Stop treating your prospects like bags of money and focus instead on developing relationships with them. Listen to your leads – they should do more talking than you! Be empathetic, remember small details and go out of your way to show that you care about them, not just the sale. Avoid being too pushy and make them feel comfortable around you. That’s how you get people to open up and be more inclined to call back or go through with the sale.

3. Become an expert on your product/service

You’ll never have a successful career in sales if you don’t know your product/service through and through. It doesn’t matter what you sell; you should be able to answer any questions a customer has without looking stuff up. Become an encyclopedia of knowledge – this impresses prospects and builds faith in you as you look like you know what you’re talking about.

4. Don’t make crazy promises

In general, you should shy away from making any sort of promise to a prospect. You never know what might happen – and if they’ve got the promise written down in an email or text, then you could be in trouble. That being said, there are times when you can promise things because they’re in your control. E.g. You promise to send them an email with more details within 24 hours. Or, you’re a car salesperson, and you can promise that you’ll clean their new car and fill up the tank before they pick it up.

Those types of promises are fine, though avoid making crazy ones just to try and sell a product. This happens a lot when you’re selling things to business clients, and you promise them that your product will change their operations and generate loads more profit. Never do stuff like this; if you’re not 100% sure you can keep a promise, do not make it!

5. Build a referral network

The best salespeople succeed because their old customers refer them to new customers. It goes back to the idea of building good relationships – you’re more likely to see positive reviews or direct referrals. Go a step further and encourage people to recommend you by building a referral network. If possible, make it so everyone involved gains something – the customer who refers you may get a discount on future purchases, while the new customer gets the same discount on their first purchase. This is how you secure more sales, and also how you retain loyalty for long-term gains.

Print out these golden rules and keep them on your wall as a constant reminder of what it takes to be successful in the world of sales. You will never have a 100% conversion rate, but that’s fine! These tips help you make more sales and build long-term success.
