From Plain Geek To Geek Chic: Here's The Real Reason Why You're Struggling To Style Your Glasses

When you were younger, there’s a strong chance that you brought into the trend of ‘fashion glasses’. These frames, which contain either fake glass or no glass at all, were a big styling hit in the 2010s. More accessory than necessity, you might have had a lot of fun styling those frames and then putting them away on days when they didn’t feel like they worked.

Unfortunately, as you get older, you may find that you actually need to wear glasses day-to-day. And when those frames are imposed upon you, it can suddenly feel a lot harder to ensure that they look as good as possible.

However, the fact that plenty of people manage to look great in glasses means that, if you’re struggling to achieve the same, there’s probably a reason for it. But what could that reason be? Keep on reading to find out.

# 1 – Choosing Impractical Styles

If you continually struggle to make your glasses look good, then ask yourself whether you’re simply choosing the wrong styles in the first place. This is an easy mistake to make if you approach glasses the way you would any other accessory.

Don’t get us wrong, we understand the desire to reach for the bright, bulky frames in the shop. These options are striking, and they certainly catch your eye. But their very boldness means that they might simply look ill-suited to a lot of your looks. And, trust us when we say that buying a pair of glasses to suit every style probably isn’t the solution!

Instead, think back to those so-called fashion glasses – most often, they were solid, black frames that looked good with everything. Equally, many glasses wearers now opt for clear or metal frames for the same adaptability benefits. These generally universal choices are far more likely to look good whether you’re on a night out or you’re trying to impress in the office.

# 2 – Failing to Think About Fit

Entirely ignoring fit to secure the glasses you most like the look of is another fatal glass styling mistake. That’s because glasses aren’t fashion items that rely solely on appearances. They also require a good fit to look their best. If you forego that or fail to address issues that prevent the right fit, then your look will always be a little uneven.

Generally speaking, you can ensure the best fit for your glasses by simply getting a professional fitting or thinking about the shape of your face and how well those glasses fit your nose. A professional can also adjust things like the tightness of glass arms to ensure that your glasses aren’t too loose or liable to slip.

These professionals will almost always be able to find a pair that works for you, but what if they can’t? Sometimes, issues including a narrow bridge, uneven nose, or unusual cheekbone structure can all stand in the way. In these instances, seeking the help of a facial or nose surgeon may be the best way to ensure glasses that actually look good on you. You certainly can’t ignore these issues and still expect your glasses to shine!

# 3 – Not Managing To Make Make Up Work

While you might assume you can simply keep right on with the same makeup routine once you have glasses, you may quickly realise that it isn’t possible. And, if you’re making key makeup mishaps, then it’s really no surprise those glasses aren’t working for you. Dark, heavy makeup styles and bright, bold lipsticks can especially seem out of place or a little too much when you also have thick-rimmed glasses.

It’s far better to opt for makeup that directly ties your glasses into your look. For instance, experts recommend lighter eyeshadows that provide a far more subtle backing to the framing your glasses provide, while products like mascara and bright lipstick are typically best avoided. Remember that your brows will also be under a lot more scrutiny when you’re wearing attention-grabbing glasses. Perfecting your eyebrow filler is, therefore, a must.

# 4 – How About Hairstyle?

Makeup isn’t the only thing you might need to reassess now that you’re wearing glasses. Your hairstyle of choice can also make or break this new look of yours. Hairstyles that could lead to a particularly unbalanced look with glasses include blunt fringes that come right down to the frames, voluminous layered looks, or simply any style that’s a little wispy. These can all create the sense of appearance-based overwhelm, or simply serve to confuse the strong look that glasses can bring.

By comparison, styles that tend to work particularly well with glasses include sleek bobs, curled styling, and a short or sideways fringe. Simply make sure that whichever style you choose, it complements, rather than confuses, the overall look of your glasses.

# 5 – Forgetting to Factor For Your Outfits

We’ve already mentioned that it isn’t practical to own a different pair of glasses for every outfit, but that doesn’t mean you can simply sit back and expect one pair to work with every item of clothing you own. After all, your glasses are an accessory, and they should look cohesive with everything else you’ve got going on.

Colour coordination obviously matters a little here, but not as much as you might think. After all, even bright yellow glasses could look good with blacks or neutrals if you were brave enough to pull it off. Instead, it’s worth thinking about smaller considerations when choosing the right glasses. For instance, if you’re a person who wears a lot of prints, then statement glasses could be a funky addition or point of contrast. Alternatively, if you prefer sleek, professional outfits, you’re probably better off pairing them with some subtle, sleek frames.

Glasses can feel like they throw your whole look into question, but remember that they can also be a fantastic fashion addition of their own. Simply make sure that you’re avoiding these styling mistakes to make it happen!
