Durbar Square is an intimate, inviting Nepalese restaurant that has quickly become the go-to spot for those in the know. Helmed by Chef Hom Nath (Binod), whose expertise in Nepalese cuisine shines through every dish, delivering a masterclass in bold, aromatic flavours – using only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients.
The menu is a love letter to Nepalese gastronomy, with an enticing array of dishes that range from delicate momos (dumplings) to hearty curries and vibrant stir-fries. Vegetarians and vegans are also well catered for, with plenty of plant-based delights on offer.
We kicked things off with chargrilled lamb chops (£12.45) succulent, spice-kissed, and cooked to perfection in the charcoal tandoor.
The Durbar Sizzler (£23.00) was a showstopper, featuring a mouthwatering medley of lamb chops, seekh kebab, chicken tikka, prawn kebab, and fish tikka, all served with crisp salad and a side of zesty sauce. The Okra Fry (£6.95), golden and crisp with a medley of fragrant spices, proved utterly addictive, while the Gobi Manchurian (£6.95) – a Nepalese Chinese fusion of wok-fried cauliflower – offered a punchy, umami-laden kick.
For mains, the Durbar Lamb Biryani (£15.95) was an instant favourite: tender, spiced lamb nestled within fluffy, fragrant rice, served with cooling raita. The Dal Makhani (£10.95), a creamy medley of black lentils and red kidney beans, was pure comfort in a bowl, while the Butter Chicken (£12.95) delivered a rich, velvety tomato-based sauce that clung lovingly to every bite of chicken tikka.
To finish? A Mango & Coffee Kulfi (£5.95) – smooth, sweet, and indulgently refreshing. And, of course, this feast was washed down with an obligatory pint of Cobra and a crisp Sauvignon Blanc for good measure.
