How The Wilmslow Hospital’s breast care services can support you

If you need a routine breast screening or are concerned about breast symptoms, HCA Healthcare UK’s experts at The Wilmslow Hospital are on hand to offer support.

Breast screening

The best way to keep on top of your breast health is through regular screening. Even if you don’t have any obvious symptoms, breast screens can detect irregularities at the earliest stages when a potential cancer is much easier to treat. To support you, The Wilmslow Hospital offers routine breast screening to women over 40 who aren’t experiencing symptoms and haven’t had a mammogram in the last 12 months. Using the latest diagnostic equipment, including 2D and 3D mammography and ultrasound, our screens can give you assurance of your breast health.

Whatever your age, if you spot something concerning, you should visit your GP or breast specialist without delay. So, what should you look for? Keep an eye out for any new lumps on your breast or underarm, or changes in the appearance of your breasts, like dimpling of the skin, redness, or a change in size or shape. You should also be aware of changes to the nipple, like unusual discharge, eczema, a rash or the nipple inverting.

One-Stop Breast Clinic

After seeing your GP, you can ask them to refer you to The Wilmslow Hospital’s One-Stop Breast Clinic, which offers consultations with breast experts and all initial diagnostic tests in a single visit. You can also be referred if anything is detected during a routine breast screening, or through self-referral in some cases.

At your appointment, you’ll have a consultation with one of our consultants and our breast care nurses, who’ll discuss your symptoms and carry out an examination. Next, you’ll have a mammogram so our team can look for any abnormalities. They might also give you an ultrasound so they can take a closer look. You’ll get the results from these tests during your visit, and after discussing these with the team, you can go home with peace of mind that day.

If we detect any irregularities, we might take a biopsy, with results available in a couple of days. Waiting for results can be very worrying, so our specialist breast care nurses will be on hand to offer support.
