How to Boost Employee Comfort in the Workplace

Anything that can help to improve your business’s productivity, creativity, employee retention, and profitability is worth paying attention to.

All too often, we think that radical improvements require radical operational changes, but that’s not always the case. In some cases, even minor changes can have a big impact on a company’s prospects.

That’s certainly the case with employee comfort, which is something that is often overlooked but which can be highly influential in ensuring an employee can perform at their highest level.

In this post, we’ll look at a few key ways that businesses can increase employee comfort, none of which are overly complicated.

Design an Inspiring Space

Where an employee works can have a huge impact on how well they’re able to perform their duties. Workers work best when they’re working in a well-designed, clutter-free work environment that has good lighting, ideally natural lighting.

If it’s been a while since you last updated your worksite’s decor, then now could be the time. Increasing the amount of natural light, adding a few splashes of colour, and committing to keeping the space clean and organised really can make a difference.

Provide Comfortable Equipment and Clothing

Employees perform better when they have comfortable clothing and equipment, since it allows them to focus on their tasks without being distracted. It’s much easier, after all, for an employee to work well when they have comfortable, functional workwear and/or comfortable seating. All too often, employers provide their workers with outdated clothing or low-quality desk/chair combinations and still expect the worker to perform well. In reality, the worker ends up becoming irritated or physically uncomfortable, both of which can quickly cause productivity levels to decline.

Upgrade the Break Spaces

It’s important for employees to have a non-work space on-site at their workplace, since it allows them to rest and recover throughout the day. However, in many cases, break spaces are often underwhelming and appear to have been afterthoughts. Working to upgrade your break spaces, such as by adding plants, adding comfortable seating, and offering premium coffee/snacks, can make it easier for employees to relax during their breaks.

Allow For Autonomy

Offering workers as much autonomy as possible can boost comfort by ensuring that they have the freedom to work when and where they want. While there’ll be a limit to how much freedom you can give them, allowing employees to be flexible with start/end times can save them from rushing into work while also offering a dose of psychological/emotional comfort.

Take Feedback Onboard

Finally, remember that the people who will know how to upgrade your employees’ comfort levels will be the employees themselves, so ask them! They’ll have ideas of their own, and if possible, you can simply take their suggestions onboard and make them happen. This won’t just increase their comfort levels, but will also help to boost their sense of belonging and job satisfaction — after all, everyone wants to feel like their employer cares about what they have to say.
