How to Take Care of Your Skin

Taking care of your skin isn’t just about looking good, but about keeping your body healthy, protected, and functioning at its best. For some people, skin care even involves medical procedures like skin cancer removal. But everyday habits play a huge role in keeping your skin strong and resilient long before anything serious develops.

The first and most important step you could ever take is to cleanse your skin. Your skin deals with an awful lot. Sweat, dirt, oils, makeup, and whatever the wind decides to throw at you is hitting your skin every day. Washing your face twice a day, morning and night keeps things fresh and helps prevent clogged pores. A gentle cleanser works for most people, no need to scrub like you’re sanding a piece of furniture anymore. You also need to make sure that you’re using sunscreen, but will come to that later.

Moisturizing is so important for your skin. Even if your skin feels oily, it still needs hydration. A good moisturizer keeps your skin barrier happy, reduces dryness, and can help to protect you from irritation. Choose something that suits your skin type though. Lightweight gels for your skin, creams for dry skin, and something soothing if it’s sensitive. But the real MVP of skin care isn’t moisturizing, it’s sunscreen.

We mentioned skin cancer removal earlier on and this is a reason why. Sunscreen is great because while the sun may feel lovely, the UV rays can damage your skin faster than you think. Daily sunscreen, even when it’s cloudy, helps to prevent early wrinkles, dark spots, and skin cancer. You want to aim for SPF 30 or higher and reapply when you’re outdoors for long periods. You want to avoid developing skin cancers, and if you do get worried about freckles or moles appearing on your skin, you need to seek help from a doctor.

Taking care of your skin also includes removing any dead skin cells, not just skin cancers. Exfoliation is another step that makes that happen. It brightens your complexion and helps your products to work better. But more isn’t always better. Overexfoliating can irritate your skin, so one to three times a week is usually enough. You want to choose gentle scrubs or chemical exfoliants that depend on your skin’s needs.

From the inside, you can work with your body with water. Drinking enough water each day helps keep your skin plump, smooth and healthy, and it’s a simple habit with big benefits. Another way to help yourself from the inside is to watch what you eat. Foods rich in vitamins, healthy fat, and antioxidants like fruits, veggies, nuts and fish help your skin to stay strong. You don’t need a perfect diet, just be mindful of balance. Your skin is a living organ and it loves being fed well.

With the help of sleep and stress management on top and being consistent with everything else, you don’t need to worry about a 12 step routine. Simple, steady habits make the biggest impact. Taking care of your skin is a form of self respect. With a few daily habits you can keep it healthy and glowing.
