Is It Really Impossible To Create A Comfortable AND Productive Office?

A comfortable office space is the best place to work – we all know that. But there’s a long standing stigma against this kind of office space. Namely, that being comfortable at work means you’re not going to be as productive as you really could be.

Let us tell you now, that statement couldn’t be more false if it tried. A comfortable office is a productive office. You can’t work without something comfy to sit on, a drink and a snack nearby, and the right atmosphere.

But if you’re worried that creating an office like this will spiral out of hand for you, the tips below might help give you a better idea of building the best working space for you.

How is Your Space Orientated?

Because it should revolve around you, and what you need to work. Any other layout is simply not good enough! So, if your current office layout feels in any way restrictive, it’s best to change it.

Back to the door, so you feel like anyone could walk in and you wouldn’t know? Turn the desk around to face the other way. Mini fridge on the other side of the room? Move it next to your desk.

The more you have to get up and move yourself out of a productive zone, the worse the office is for your overall productivity. And no, it’s not lazy to not want to move out of your chair for a couple of hours! You’re working, and you shouldn’t have to cross the office or leave the room to simply grab a drink when you’re thirsty.

What are You Sitting on?

The importance of a supportive, properly padded chair can never be understated. Never let yourself work with a seat that doesn’t help you to sit up straight, with lumbar support, and plenty of cushioning for your lower half.

Choose a chair that seats you at the right angle, with your back parallel to your computer screen and an easy 60cm between your eyes and the monitor. And if you’ve already got a chair you love, you can pack it out with some extra upholstery foam, to help the seat cushion last longer and end up molding to fit your unique shape.

Keep it Tidy

Personality is one thing, and every office needs it. But when it comes to pairing decor and productivity together, your workspace cannot be overloaded with clutter. You need to keep it tidy – although it doesn’t necessarily need to be neat.

That means keeping things to a minimum in terms of impact. If there’s a way to put it out of sight, make it happen. For example, use a cable tidy to keep wires as invisible as possible. Similarly, there should be a waste basket nearby so rubbish can be cleared immediately.

A comfortable and productive office supports you. It makes you feel like you can do your best. And most of all, it doesn’t get in the way of your needs.
