There’s something rather appealing about a holiday where you can simply unpack, slow down and decide what you fancy doing next. No rigid timetable, no need to dress for dinner every evening and, if the mood takes you, breakfast on your own balcony before heading to the pool.

That’s very much the vibe at the newly refurbished IDILIQ Hotel & Resorts, Wyndham Portocolom – where the ease and service of a luxury hotel meets the extra freedom and space of an apartment stay.

Set in the pretty Majorcan harbour town of Portocolom, the resort makes a great base for anything from a few days in the sunshine with friends to a longer family escape. And with beaches, restaurants and the picturesque harbour all close by, you certainly don’t need to venture far to feel as though you’re properly on holiday.

Accommodation here, comes in three styles – Classic rooms, Studios and One-bedroom apartments – all newly refreshed with bright interiors, natural tones, clean lines and private furnished balconies. Classic rooms work particularly well for shorter breaks, with king or twin beds, a contemporary bathroom with walk-in shower and all the essentials, including air conditioning, Wi-Fi and a Smart TV. For a little more independence, the Studios add an open-plan dining area and kitchenette with hob, microwave and fridge, making them ideal for couples or solo travellers who like the flexibility of doing their own thing.

The One-bedroom apartments offer even more space, with a separate double bedroom and an open-plan living and dining area complete with sofa bed. There’s also a fully equipped kitchenette and private balcony, making these a particularly good option for couples wanting more room or families travelling with children.

It’s all refreshingly uncomplicated: modern, comfortable and designed around the way we like to holiday.

Breakfast, pool, repeat…

Days at Wyndham Portocolom can be as lazy or as active as you choose. There’s a swimming pool for those all-important sunshine hours, alongside a gym and multi-sports court, while a cinema screens live sporting events. There’s even a co-working space for anyone who really can’t resist checking in with the office – although I’d suggest shutting the laptop and heading back to the pool. The resort also has a 24-hour reception and free Wi-Fi throughout.

Food is equally relaxed. Breakfast is served in the Restaurant & Bar from 8.30am until 11am, with snacks available between midday and 4pm and bar service from 11am until 9pm.

You can spend the day happily staying put, but one of Wyndham Portocolom’s attractions is what lies just beyond the resort. Portocolom is one of those lovely Majorcan spots that feels pleasingly easy-going. Its picturesque natural harbour is lined with restaurants and cafés, with plenty of opportunities to settle at a waterfront table for fresh seafood, tapas and Mediterranean dishes while watching the boats come and go.

Having your own kitchenette also means you can mix things up – breakfast on the balcony one morning, eat by the pool at lunchtime and wander down to the harbour for dinner that evening.

And that, really, is the beauty of staying here. Nothing feels too structured. Beyond the resort, days can be spent discovering nearby beaches and coves, wandering around local markets or exploring more of the island before returning for a swim and a drink as the sun begins to disappear. Wyndham Portocolom ticks a lot of boxes. It has the facilities and reassurance of a resort, the freedom of self-catering and a location that means you can easily step outside and experience a little more of Majorcan life. Add a relatively short flight from Manchester and it works equally well for a spontaneous sunshine escape with friends, a couples’ break or an easy family week away.

Really, what more do you need?

Perhaps just a flight, a cabin bag and a pair of sunglasses.
