Withington Girls’ School’s sporting programme has enjoyed another remarkable year, marked by landmark achievements, consistent excellence and a strong start to the summer season, proving that ambition and teamwork continue to drive success across all year groups. The Spring term delivered an impressive set of national achievements for Withington’s younger pupils. The Year 7 and Year 8 teams each reached three national finals, continuing the school’s regular presence in high-level competition. Further evidence of depth across the programme came from the Year 7 B team, who progressed to the Manchester Schools League Final. Across all of these competitions, the teams finished as silver medallists, with each side claiming second place after high-quality performances.

History was also made on the football pitch, as Withington reached its first-ever final in the Area Cup – a milestone moment for the school’s football programme. The final result for Withington’s U16s, losing a hard-fought game on penalties, capped off an exciting cup run and marked an outstanding achievement.

The transition into the summer season has been just as impressive. At the Manchester Schools Track & Field Championships, Year 10 athletes delivered exceptional performances. Twelve pupils collected individual medals, including an outstanding eight golds. These achievements secured Withington the title of overall team winners, underlining the school’s strength across track and field disciplines.

Director of Sport Lindsay Johnson, a former England Lioness, highlighted the role sport plays in shaping confident, balanced pupils across the school: “Sport at Withington is about far more than results, although we are rightly proud of what our teams achieve. It develops resilience, confidence, leadership and a sense of belonging, all of which contribute to our pupils’ happiness and success well beyond the pitch or track. Seeing excellence achieved across year groups and across different sports reflects a culture where girls are encouraged to challenge themselves and enjoy being active.”

With strong performances evident across multiple sports and year groups, Withington’s sporting success continues to reflect the school’s wider commitment to excellence. As competitions continue into the Summer term, sport remains a vital part of school life, supporting wellbeing, fostering confidence and helping pupils thrive both academically and personally. The achievements of this year stand not only as a measure of success but as a testament to the positive impact of sport across the whole school community.
