Top destinations for a European city break

Europe has an abundance of incredible cities, all with unique attractions and settings that ensure entertainment to suit all ages, interests and budgets. But how to choose the best from the bunch for your holiday? Take a look at these European cities which promise to be an unforgettable break, whether you want to learn about history, explore culture or go on adventures in nature.

Athens, Greece

Crowned Europe’s leading city break destination in the 2024 World Travel Awards yet remaining one of the most affordable capitals in the region, Athens is a must for your bucket list.

Astonishing ancient architectural feats are the main draw, mostly found in the Acropolis which is the most complete monumental complex from the era still in existence. Gaze up at the towering colonnades of the Parthenon and the ornate caryatids supporting the Erechtheion, and visit the Temple of Athena Nike, devoted to the city’s namesake.

Beyond the heritage sites, Athens is alive with sprawling markets, characterful restaurants and spectacular rooftop bars. Head beyond the city limits for glorious hikes through the surrounding hills such as the climb up Mount Parnitha.

Porto, Portugal

At the opposite end of Europe in the very southwest corner is Porto, a coastal city with attractive medieval architecture and sensational lush countryside traversed by the Douro River.

Everything about Porto is a treat for the senses which is why it’s becoming one of the most popular choices for Portugal holidays with the old and young. Buildings are brightly coloured; your ears are filled with music, chatter and the soothing sound of the waves; enticing smells spill from the markets and through restaurant doors, and there’s no shortage of mouthwatering morsels to sample.

Sailing the Douro River is a must during your stay, to visit the vineyards on the outskirts of the city where Port wine is made. Tour the terraced rows of grapes and sit down to a scenic meal accompanied by this heady beverage.

Venice, Italy

Ah, Venice: the Floating City, the City of Bridges, the City of Love, and the Queen of the Adriatic – this spectacular Italian destination has earned itself many nicknames over the centuries for its unique geography and astounding beauty.

118 islands are united by over 400 bridges which cross gondola-filled canals lined by tall houses that rise from the water below. Narrow streets open out to broad palazzos where you can listen to live music performances and enjoy pizza, pasta and ice cream in the sunshine.

Art is celebrated here,  through traditional masks that enhance a sense of mystery and magnificent museums like Doge’s Palace. There’s also the spectacular St Mark’s Basilica, which draws tourists from around the globe.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

A canal city with a decidedly different feel is Amsterdam, the capital of The Netherlands. Charm is in abundance, but rather than inspiring romance, these characterful canals have a regalness which harks back to the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age when Amsterdam was a centre for trade. The 165-strong canal belt is now a designated World Heritage Site.

You could choose to sail, but the best way to explore the streets is as the locals do – by bike. Pedal flat paths to reach each attraction which are many and varied, including the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank’s House and the Bloemenmarkt – which overflows with colourful flowers grown in the fields surrounding the city.
