But the reality is that businesses grow in different directions at different speeds and in different circumstances, and that means that what works for one isn’t going to work for another. So when businesses try to force everyone into the same kind of setup, problems are going to happen, and you’ll probably find that productivity drops. That doesn’t happen because people aren’t capable to do their work, but instead it’s more likely to be that the environment they’re working in doesn’t support how they want to do it. Allowing flexibility and choice usually leads to better outcomes than if you enforce conformity.

Processes Need To Match The Reality Of The Work

Standardised processes can be helpful, but only when they actually help with what really needs to be done in the business, otherwise they’re just adding more and more work, which is the opposite of helpful. You’ll often find that businesses adopt systems that are designed for much larger companies or completely different industries, and then they’ll wonder why things have slowed down or aren’t working properly.

The most effective processes are the works that are shaped to fit how you actually go about your work, and ideally, they should be able to evolve as your business does. If you do things this way round, things are going to be much easier altogether.

Space Plays A Big Role

On top of everything else, the physical environment also has a massive impact on how people feel and perform at work. You need to think about the layout, lighting, noise, storage, and the general flow of things to ensure that energy levels stay up and distractions are reduced as much as possible. Yes, a generic office setup might look fine on paper, but that doesn’t always mean it’s comfortable or productive in real life.

That’s why a lot of businesses are investing in bespoke workspaces that actually reflect their size, culture, and way of working. That way, you can create an environment that really does support people who are using them every day, and the results should speak for themselves.
