The cold winter weather can be harsh on your home. From frozen pipes to roof damage, there are many different issues that are worth watching out for in the winter months. Below are 5 home issues to keep an eye on as the temperature drops.
Frozen pipes
In sub-zero temperatures, water in pipes can freeze up. When water freezes, it can often expand, which can cause pipes to burst. This is particularly common with exterior pipes or pipes in uninsulated areas of properties – especially if they have not been used for some time and water has been left to stagnate in the pipe.
Check any exterior pipes regularly in winter to check that they are not damaged. If you’re abandoning your home for more than two weeks in winter, it’s recommended that you drain water from all the pipes. Installing pipe insulation can also prevent plumbing from freezing up.
Boiler breakdowns
Boiler breakdowns are common in the winter months. This is simply because they are more heavily used during this season, leading to a greater chance of wear and tear.
It’s advised that you service your boiler before winter arrives – this will flag up any problems, so that they can be fixed before winter arrives. If it’s too late for that now, make sure to not ignore the early signs of boiler issues like strange noises or short cyclings. Getting these problems fixed before a breakdown happens can prevent you from being without heating in winter.
Roof damage
Heavy snow loads, ice dams and strong winds can all cause roof damage during the winter months. This can lead to poor insulation, rainwater leaks and pest infestations.
Look out for signs of roof damage like leaks or visibly missing shingles. Call out roofers to assess the damage and get repairs done as quickly as you can to prevent further damage to your roof.
Leaky guttering
Your gutters help to direct water runoff from the roof into drains, so that it doesn’t flow down the side of your home and seep into your foundations. Winter is a prime time for gutters to become blocked and damaged – leaves and debris from autumn can clog up clutters leading to a backlog of water, which can freeze up and cause gutters to expand and crack.
Check that your gutters are draining properly and that water isn’t pouring through cracks in them or pouring over the sides. Gutter specialists will be able to clear and fix your gutters.
Damaged door seals
Door seals and window seals can also wear out in the winter months. Moisture can get into cracks and gaps, freeze up and cause seals to come loose. This can cause water and cold draughts to enter your home.
If you notice draughts or leaks around doors and windows, inspect the seal to see if it is broken. Replacing this as soon as you can will help to prevent water damage from rain leaking in and heat loss – ultimately saving your money in repairs and energy bills.
