4 Ways To Expand Your Home & Gain More Space

If you feel that you and your family have started to outgrow your home – you’re not alone. Moving can be a real pain, but it doesn’t have to be your only option if you’re in need of more room. Your current home might have plenty of untapped potential to create that extra space. From loft conversions to smart layout redesigns, there are tons of different solutions to help you make the most of every bit of square footage.

Loft Conversion

Most lofts end up being a bit of a dumpling ground. An underutilised, half-empty space. Instead of using it to house your Christmas decorations and a few forgotten knick-knacks, make the most of that empty space in your roof and transform it into something super functional.

Loft conversions make great spaces for extra bedrooms, bathrooms or even a nice secluded office. They don’t change the actual footprint of your house, so you won’t lose any ground space and it’s pretty easy to get permission for in the UK.

Knocking Down Walls

Sometimes you don’t have to build more to get more space. Instead, you might be better off rethinking the layout of your home and knocking down a wall or two. Got any useless rooms you don’t really utilise? Well, knock a wall down, and you can create a much bigger feeling space without having to extend your home.

A great example would be if you’ve got a narrow hallway that’s tricky to do anything with, knock down a wall to the room next to it, and you’ve got a bigger living space you can do more with. It’s a cheaper option to build a new space and will take much less time to get done.

Extension

If you’re really struggling for a lot of indoor space but have a decent size garden or space to the side of your home, then you might want to consider extending your home in some way. A rear extension might be good if you have a lot of garden space you don’t mind giving up to increase the size of your living room or kitchen.

You could also extend to the side of your property if you have the space to do so, which might end up being cheaper and more convenient if you want to keep your garden as is. If you really need a lot more space and are still put off moving, you could think about a double-storey extension.

Conservatories

If you’re put off by all the construction and potential time it’ll take to have conversions and extensions done, but still want to gain more space in your home, then you’re not out of options. Conservatories are cheaper and easier to install extensions to your home that require far less labour and time to build. If you’re just wanting a bit of extra downstairs living space, they’re ideal. Although they end up being cheaper, they are a bit less practical than the alternatives, but make great options in a pinch.

No matter the size of your home, there’s always some potential to expand it before thinking about having to move. The right choice will help unlock that much-needed extra space and create a much more functional home.
