One of the reasons why it can be difficult to make positive changes is that you simply don’t know how much of a positive impact they can have until you’ve made them part of your routine.
Until then, they’re just theoretical concepts.
Once you have started them, however, you’ll typically find that you wish you had started them sooner. In this post, we’re going to run through some of the best ways to enhance your well-being, and remember, while the best time to start many of the following may have been years ago, the second-best time is right now. Let’s take a look.
Regular Exercise
From the outside, it can look as if going to the gym or otherwise focusing on exercise can be a vanity project that people undertake to improve their appearance.
But actually, while most people do improve their appearance through exercise, it’s often not the primary reason why most people work out. That belongs to the outstanding mental health benefits that working up a sweat can bring.
Committing to regularly working up a sweat really can do wonders for your physical and mental health. Stick with it for at least a couple of months, and the benefits will likely be so obvious that you wouldn’t dream of giving it up.
Regular Massages
Our bodies go through a lot, even when it doesn’t even feel like it. If you work in an office, for instance, then you may be subjecting your body to positions and tension that it was not designed for. Many people find that their bodies are stiff and in mild discomfort even when they’ve just been sitting in a chair all day.
We’re often unaware of how much tension our bodies are carrying, and it’s only when that tension is released, such as during a massage, that we’re truly able to relax. Many people view massages as a luxury, but there are good reasons to make them a fundamental part of your self-care routine. They can do wonders for relieving muscle tension, enhancing circulation, and preventing pain. It’s an easy, effective, and enjoyable way to keep your body in tip-top condition, especially when combined with other activities that boost the body, such as yoga.
Meditation and Breathwork
People often shy away from meditation and breathwork because they believe that they’re complicated.
But actually, the opposite is true. Not only are they not complicated, but they’re surprisingly easy. After all, you don’t need any special equipment or preparation. You can do them anywhere, anytime.
You just need to know how to do them, but that’s easy enough thanks to the abundance of quality meditation apps and YouTube breathwork tutorials. Build breathwork and meditation into your morning routine, and it won’t be long before you feel calmer, more resilient, and, most likely, happier.
Spending Time in Nature
Since many of us now live in urban areas, it’s not always as easy to access nature as we would like it to be.
But there are good reasons to make the effort. Spending time in nature really can have a hugely positive impact on mental well-being, with one study finding that two hours of nature time each week can have a noticeable impact on feelings of depression and anxiety. Plus, going into nature can simply be fun, especially when you’re with friends. Think of it as an enjoyable way to give your mental health a boost without even realising that’s what you’re doing.
Enhancing Your Sleep
Many of us treat sleep as an afterthought. We simply go to bed when we’re done with the day.
However, it can be worthwhile to make sleep a priority. Research consistently shows that a good night’s sleep is paramount for keeping your body and mind at their best. Indeed, sleeping well is one of those things that you’ll notice after even just a week.
The key to sleeping well is to understand that it doesn’t just happen, but is something that you induce. Putting together a sleep-friendly routine that includes avoiding caffeine, alcohol, and screens, as well as creating a good sleeping environment, can help you to reach — and stay in — the land of nod.
Lifestyle Improvements
It’s easy to fall into a routine with your lifestyle, but there can be value in challenging and changing some aspects if they’re no longer serving you. Eliminating alcohol, eating healthy foods, and drinking plenty of water really can make a big difference to how you feel, including, in some cases, radically improving your energy levels and mood. Give them a try, and it’s unlikely that you’ll go back to your old ways.
