Top five tips for healthy eyes
1. Eat healthily – maintain a good diet and lifestyle. Nutritional supplements can be useful, if you are in a higher risk category for age-related macula degeneration (AMD) ie family history, females, blonde, blue eyes.
2. Stop smoking – smoking significantly increases the risk of developing cataracts, AMD and vascular disease which can increase the risk of blindness.
3. Protect your eyes from the sun – harmful UV rays considerably increase the risk for developing cataracts sooner than later as well as AMD. Make sure you always wear good quality sunglasses with full UV protection and consider a polarised option.
4. Have regular eye tests – at least every two years and in some cases every year. They can detect not only early stages of eye disease but also serious general health problems. Some blinding conditions have NO symptoms in the early stages.
5. Prevent dry eyes – dry eye symptoms are more common in females and as you get older. Symptoms are dry, gritty, itchy, red, watery and tired eyes. Central heating, air conditioning and using the computer can make it worse. About 15% of adults aged over 40 suffer. Using lubricating eye drops, staying hydrated and having breaks from the computer can help.
Top ten reasons to have an eye examination
1. The majority of eye problems have no symptoms in the early stages and routine eye examinations can pick up the early warning signs.
2. Treatment at an early stage can help to preserve your sight especially with young children and the elderly.
3. You only have one pair of eyes – eyesight is the worst feared sense to lose.
4. Just because your vision is good does NOT mean your eyes are healthy.
5. The eye test can pick up not only eye disease but serious general health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes or cancer.
6. Poor vision is dangerous and you could be driving illegally.
7. It’s important to monitor changes in vision and your prescription as these could indicate health concerns such as diabetes.
8. For young people, poor vision can affect their performance at school as well as future prospects and development.
9. The optometrist will give you important advice on how best to maintain healthy eyes for the future.
10. An eye examination should form part of your general ‘MOT’ like a trip to see the dentist or doctor.
