The latest addition to the Manchester dining scene is Flat Iron which opened last month on Deansgate, in the heart of the city centre. The two-floor restaurant is housed in a Grade II Listed building, designed by Charles Heathcote and first opened to the public in 1908 as the office of the Royal London Friendly Society.

Founder Charlie Carroll opened Flat Iron in 2012 as a pop-up above a pub in East London. Committed to doing a few things really well, Charlie aimed to make great steak available for everyone.

Bringing their single-minded commitment to serving remarkable steak at an affordable price to the heart of Manchester, the restaurant’s concise menu is led by the signature ‘Flat Iron’ steak, taken from the often-overlooked featherblade, which is known for its flavour, tenderness and juiciness when butchered with skill and care, alongside much-loved sides such as beef dripping chips, creamed spinach, truffled macaroni cheese and crispy bone marrow garlic mash.

A rotating board of specials are available, including a Wagyu steak of the day, and a Scottish ribeye, exclusive to Manchester. The restaurant also has a bespoke charcoal grill, which is used for all beef specials.

The menu is simple, and their signature Flat Iron steak is just £14, which is not only reasonably priced, but very tasty. The sides are were just the right size, and delicious. And the free-flowing popcorn when you sit down, and the free ice-cream when you’re are leaving are a welcome extra.

And in the words of Flat Iron’s founder, Charlie Carroll, “Flat Iron is about unpretentious, top-quality steak, available to all.”
