We visited Staffordshire’s 5* Country Retreat…
Moddershall Oaks’ can be found nestled in the heart of the stunning Staffordshire countryside, just under a 90-minute drive from Manchester and its surrounding areas. The rolling green hills upon arrival are an instant escape from city life.
In the reception, the feeling of relaxation continues; diffusers and candles are lit, and friendly staff are on hand to offer a welcome drink, give a guided tour, and encourage guests to wander the spa, hotel, deli, restaurant and even the outdoors, fully robed, for maximum comfort and a home away from home.
Towel in hand and (swim)-suited up, guests are offered unlimited access to the spa facilities, including before and after treatments, and even after checking out at 11am, until 5.30pm on the same day. The new outdoor spa area includes a 25sqm heated vitality pool and kelo sauna, both overlooking the idyllic hillside, perfect on a sunny day like we were lucky to experience. The indoor spa area includes aswimming pool, steam room, hydrotherapy pool, heated tiled loungers, experience shower & reflexology footbaths. There’s also a gym andcomfy relaxation lounge- perfect for napping or settling down with that book which always gets pushed aside during busy day to day life.
The Elemis Targeted Toning Tightenertreatment, priced at £50 for 1 area, £80 for 2 areas or £120 for 3 areas, is said to tighten, tone, and reduce the look of cellulite after just one go, but isn’t for the faint hearted (we won’t mention the paper pants). The powerful massage is at times uncomfortable, and the detoxifying clay mask is positively freezing, but the results are undeniable. We left with thighs and a stomach that felt trimmer and lighter, and got complimented on it too! For something more relaxing opt for the Indian Head Massage (£40 for 20 minutes) proven to help headaches, sleep problems, sinus congestion and stress, or, if you don’t have sensitive skin (the machine proved to be quite rough), try the Elemis BIOTEC Skin Solutions Facial, improving dullness and oiliness for an all-round healthier complexion (£40 – 25 mins or £75 – 55 mins).
The award-winning restaurant boasts a beautiful lakeside view, even visible at night from the illumination of twinkly fairy lights. Inside, authentic wooden beams and candle lit tables give the room a cosy chalet vibe, perfect for the intimate space.
We started with light and fresh Green Pea Velouté and creamy Chicken Liver Parfait with crunchy date and almond biscotti, followed by juicy Chicken Supreme with pea, parsley, parmesan risotto and braised fennel, and Sirloin Steak accompanied by mushroom stuffed beef tomato, parmesan crumble, paprika chips, red wine sauce, and roasted broccoli florets. Both mains were utterly delicious, but so filling we couldn’t manage a dessert!
We were back in the restaurant the morning after, with a clear view over the glorious lake, and fuelling up on smoked salmon, scrambled eggs, and a vegetarian breakfast.
We stayed in one of the modern luxury suites (available with twin or double beds) complete with ensuite bathroom, complimentary toiletries, TV and outdoor seated decking area. There’s also exclusive use of a shared hot tub which we took full advantage of – heaven!
Whether it’s being active by taking a picturesque woodland walk, playing a spot of tennis on the wood side tennis court, or enjoying a ride through the village of Moddershall using the complimentary cycling equipment, or whether you simply want to unwind and recharge in the spa, Moddershall is truly a hidden gem. There’s no signal, so ideal for people who want to completely disconnect (but don’t worry if not, the Wi-Fi is second to none!)
