Tails are wagging over this fantastically pooch-friendly holiday getaway
We all felt in holiday mode so took ourselves off to the aptly named Eden Valley in Cumbria and Harrison Holidays’ fabulous Wild Rose Caravan Park.
As soon as I arrived, I felt at home. I mean I know the humans love hotels but there’s something about this holiday park which was utterly spellbinding as soon as we arrived. The views of the surrounding Pennines are spectacular, and I couldn’t stop gazing over at a pointy mountain which we discovered was the location for a film about the Boer war. Was Tom Cruise there? He has apparently graced the area with his presence over the years!
For a couple of nights our new home was a dog friendly lodge, which is only one of several different options to choose from at the park. You could stay in a caravan or a glamping hive, but the humans had decided that they needed more space and a heap of luxury.
Wild Rose is one of nine parks owned by the Harrison family, but this one is the most luxurious as it has undergone a multi-million pound revamp that has included a fantastic new pool, the Coast & Country Bar and Restaurant, a new café and children’s play area. Who needs to go anywhere else?
And if you are looking for somewhere super dog friendly, then Wild Rose is definitely the place.
I have to say this was one of my all-time favourite places to stay. I loved the outside space surrounding the lodge so that I could roam around freely without anyone worrying about me. There was a brilliant dog exercise area designed specifically so that we could run around and not annoy other guests, special bins for dog waste, and we were also allowed into the Coast & Country Bar and Restaurant.
There’s a great holiday camp feel in the restaurant which is so much fun. Just let yourself go while “The Big Man of Soul” AK belts out I’ll Go where the Music Takes Me, followed by a medley of Drifter’s Hits, some Lionel Richie and a smattering of Luther Vandross. My humans were loving it. And so was I! AK even serenaded me with a tune on the night. It was all so laid back and totally memorable.
The humans ate in the restaurant both nights we were there enjoying steak and chips and Halloumi salad and cheesecake one night and sausage and mash and pasta the next. It’s a menu filled with “greatest hits” like fish and chips, ribs, curry and burgers but also very family friendly so you have pizza and a special children’s menu too.
The nearest place to visit is Appleby (renowned for its annual Horse Fair) and you can get there by walking along the River Eden and if you are a walker you’ll love how you start off along a winding country lane, cross fields and wind your way through woodland. It was the perfect way to spend a sunny day.
Then it was back to the lodge. Ours had three bedrooms, a smart TV, shower and toilet, and every facility you needed to be comfortable.
For humans who don’t mind leaving their pet pooches in their holiday lodge for an hour or two or – dread the thought – don’t even have a four-legged friend, other delights await.
As part of the Wild Rose’s stunning new £7m leisure and entertainment complex, there’s a fabulous indoor/outdoor swimming pool, heated to a balmy 29°C and perfect for getting in a few lengths if you’re feeling energetic, or for soaking up the rays of late summer on a sun lounger (maybe cocktail in hand). It also boasts a café and a soft play area, so the grown ups can sit and chat over coffee and cake on the balcony overlooking the beautiful Pennines while the young ones let off steam close by.
It truly is the place to kick back and take time out with your loved ones – and of course your furry friends.
My humans had never stayed at a holiday park before but by the end of our trip they were total converts.
