Are You Scaling Faster than Your Space Can Handle?

Which, at first, honestly sounds pretty amazing, but is it though? You started out with a small business idea, and here you are! Well, while it’s true that order picking up is exciting, since it’s the whole point of running a small business. But there’s this awkward in-between phase that you don’t think about until it quite literally happens to you. At the beginning, you probably feel like it’s all sorted, maybe right from the first week in business, everything was organised. But now? Well, no, probably not anymore. For a lot of at-home businesses, it honestly gets to that point. It gets to where growth shows up before the space does.

Like it might get to the point where boxes and mailers are stacked behind the sofa on the stairs, and in rooms that have other purposes. And yeah, sure, there are worse problems than having more orders. But it’s still a problem when the space starts slowing everything down, because then growth feels less like momentum and more like constantly rearranging life to ship things.

You Need to Notice When Space is Becoming the Problem

Okay, so there’s a specific moment where a business stops being limited by demand and starts being limited by logistics. It usually looks like wasted time. Meaning that there’s time spent moving stock just to get to other stock. Plus, there’s time spent hunting for tape because tape has apparently developed legs. Oh, and of course, there’s time spent clearing a surface so an order can be packed, then clearing it again, then doing it again tomorrow. But a lot of stuff gets damaged, scuffed, you name it, thanks to this tetris gamr you’re playing, oh, and the mental load from all this guesswork, that’s a bad one too.

What Can Live Elsewhere?

Okay, like, not everything needs to be within arm’s reach every day. Like it makes sense to have some stock that’s daily-use, bestsellers, core product lines, supplies that get touched constantly ot stay near you, right? But what about that other stuff? Like seasonal-only stuff? What about market display gear for when you go to sell at markets?

Well, those sorts of things need to be put up, obviously they need to be labeled, but they should be put up. So, what sort of options are there? Well, you could look at container storage at a storage facility, some people buy a shed (if they have a garden), or look into a room to rent out for storage. But theres thankfulyl options out there you could consider if you wanted.

Just Stop Letting Supplies Multiply without Any Structure

Yep, this is a major one here because supplies have a special talent for expanding. It just does as long as you’re not organised, one pair of scissors turns into three, one pack of labels turns into seven, one pack of bubble wrap turns into way more than you’ll need for years. All of this happens due to a lack of proper inventory checks. While sure, you can buy in bulk, which is fine, honestly, it’s smart cause bulk is cheaper, but the problem is storing supplies in a way that makes reordering feel controlled instead of frantic.

When supplies are scattered around the house, they get bought twice, because nobody can see what exists. Then space disappears even faster. So, that’s why there needs to be a better system here.
