Finding out you are pregnant can be one of the most exciting moments in your life but it often comes hand in hand with a wave of questions, worries, and an overwhelming amount of information. Many women tell me they feel like they need to become an expert overnight which is exactly why your first antenatal appointment is so important. It’s not just about medical checks; it’s about reassurance, guidance, and creating a plan that feels right for you.

A space to talk, ask, and feel supported

As a Private Midwife, my first priority is to create a calm, supportive space where you can talk openly about how you’re feeling both physically and emotionally. Partners are very welcome to attend, and your first appointment typically lasts around an hour, giving you plenty of time to talk through everything at your own pace. No question is too small or too simple. Whether you’re wondering about symptoms, lifestyle changes, or simply what happens next, this appointment is your opportunity to start making sense of it all.

At your first visit, we’ll begin by talking through your medical history, previous pregnancies (if any), and how you’ve been feeling so far. Early pregnancy symptoms can vary hugely, person to person, and pregnancy to pregnancy, and it is important you feel heard and supported, especially if you’re dealing with things like nausea, fatigue, or anxiety.

Access to specialists when you need them

One of the unique benefits of care at The Portland Hospital Outpatients in Hale is the access to a full team of specialists under one roof. If there are any concerns about your pregnancy being at higher risk, we can involve Consultant Obstetricians early on to ensure you are getting the most appropriate care from the very beginning. If you have experienced pain, bleeding, or have a history of miscarriage, Consultant Gynaecologists are available to assess and guide you with expertise and sensitivity.

Many women initially come in for a scan, and this is often a key part of the first appointment. Our experienced sonographers can provide very detailed early scans, with accurate dating possible from as early as five weeks. Seeing your baby for the first time can be incredibly reassuring and often quite emotional.

What makes these appointments particularly valuable is how holistic they are. You may arrive expecting just a scan, but leave having had a thorough conversation with a midwife, discussed concerns with a consultant, and even received treatment if needed, for example, medication for pregnancy-related nausea.

Practical advice you can trust

We will also spend time talking about the practical side of pregnancy. This includes guidance on diet, exercise, and supplements, as well as clear evidence-based advice on the dos and don’ts such as travel, vaccinations, complementary health services, and medications. There’s a lot of conflicting information out there, so part of my role is to simplify things and help you feel confident in your choices.

Importantly, we will start looking ahead. Together, we’ll discuss screening options and begin mapping out your personalised care plan for the months ahead. Some women choose to combine private care with their NHS services, while others opt for full private antenatal care with a midwife or consultant. We’ll talk through all of these options, including choices around delivery, whether that is privately at The Portland Hospital in London or within your local NHS setting. You’ll also leave knowing exactly who to contact if you have questions between appointments, so you always feel supported throughout your pregnancy.

Ultimately, your first antenatal appointment is about more than just ticking boxes. It’s about building trust, feeling supported, and knowing that you do not have to navigate pregnancy alone. From that very first conversation, our goal is to help you feel informed, reassured, and excited for the journey ahead.
