Refined, intimate and quietly confident, The Academy offers a sophisticated townhouse retreat in the heart of Bloomsbury – one of London’s most culturally significant neighbourhoods. Surrounded by leafy squares and elegant Georgian façades, it delivers a sense of calm that feels rare for a West End address, while remaining effortlessly connected to the city beyond.
Bloomsbury has long been associated with intellectual life and creative thinking. In the early 20th century, it became home to the Bloomsbury Set – a progressive circle of writers, economists and artists including Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster – whose rejection of convention and celebration of beauty helped define the area’s character. That spirit of thoughtful individuality still lingers, and The Academy reflects it beautifully.

The hotel brings together five Georgian townhouses, seamlessly combined to create a boutique stay that feels more like a private residence than a traditional hotel. Following a multi-million-pound refurbishment by YTL Hotels, The Academy is now part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, offering understated luxury that respects its heritage while embracing modern comfort.
With just 50 bedrooms and suites, the hotel feels personal and well considered. Interiors by New York-based Champalimaud Design reinterpret classic townhouse living through a contemporary lens. Our stay in a Bloomsbury Suite revealed generous proportions, bespoke furniture and a calming colour palette, complemented by a luxurious marble en-suite and a separate seating area designed for lingering rather than rushing.
Dining and social spaces are equally inviting. The Refectory provides a relaxed yet polished setting for breakfast, while the hotel’s secluded garden offers a peaceful spot for an afternoon pause, which is a rare luxury in central London. The Alchemy Bar, located on the ground floor, is a stylish retreat for bespoke cocktails, speciality gins or a glass of champagne at the end of the day.

A standout experience is Mr Ma’s Afternoon Tea, inspired by Mr Ma and Son, a novel by celebrated Chinese author Lao She, who drew on his own experiences of London life in the 1920s. This quintessentially British ritual is given a subtle Asian twist, thoughtfully nodding to Bloomsbury’s literary heritage.
The Academy’s location is ideal for both culture and exploration. The British Museum is just minutes away, while Covent Garden, Soho, the West End theatre district and St Pancras International are all within easy reach.
Quiet, characterful and impeccably positioned, The Academy is a refined base for travellers who appreciate history, culture and discreet luxury. A hotel that feels entirely at home in Bloomsbury.
